I am very encouraged to read the January 19th article "Joint venture OK’d to boost commercial E.V. battery business." Governor Reeves and the state legislature has decided to join the modern economy and to use the same strategy Joe Biden and the Democrats use to incentive business to build factories in America. Politico has reported that after the Democrats passed the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, both of which provided subsides and tax breaks to spur factory construction, "... manufacturers have poured roughly $220 billion over the last 18 months into manufacturing construction on Biden’s watch" (https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/19/biden-manufacturing-factory-jobs-00136473) We can now add the new EV battery plant and 2,000 new high-paying jobs in Mississippi to this construction boom. The Republicans in charge deserve praise for this decision. Mississippi has pledged $187 in grants and a few more millions in bonded money to make this happen. I was disappointed to read, however, that Mississippi Republicans also threw in a 10-year, 100-percent corporate income tax exemption. Daimler, Cummins, and PACCAR, three companies that own 30% each, each are incredibly profitable companies, two of which make billions a year in profits, and PACCAR made roughly $480 in profits last year. As a matter of principle, profitable corporations ought to be paying their fair share in taxes. This is where I disagree with the Republicans. But applause is deserved nonetheless.
Of course when the Democrats passed the CHIPS Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, the right-wing pundits exploded with condemnation.
