October 9, 2023

According to the timeline, the period to submit proposals for what Interop 2024 should do just ended, and now it’s in the refinement phase.

  • Interop 2024 proposal submission period – September 14, 2023 to October 7, 2023
  • Proposals can be refined up until October 12, 2023
  • Selection of proposals by the Interop team, based on consensus
  • Communication of decisions and public launch in January 2024

Interop, remember, is short for “interoperability” between major browsers. They get together and agree on what web platform features should be prioritized in getting worked on and working exactly the same across browsers.

It’s a seriously great effort they all put in. Loud clapping.

If you have an idea for 2024, well, hopefully, it’s already on the list, otherwise you’ll have to wait until next year to propose it.

Personally, my top vote is View Transitions. I was going to propose it but I saw it was already there the other week so I just gave my thumbs up.

There are a ton of great options on that list though, and honestly I wouldn’t be devastated if any of them made the list. I get that View Transitions is fairly new, so if I have to vote I guess I’d pick some stuff that is older and probably on the list because it has some cross-browser issues to shore up.

FINE I’ll pick three more because it’s actually kinda fun to think about:

  • CSS box-decoration-break (at least unprefix it, and while we’re at it, can we do the same with mask thx)
  • Relative Color Syntax (it’s extremely cool for adjusting colors, starting with whatever)
  • attr() support extended capabilities (what if HTML attributes could actually send usable data back to CSS?)
  • 🤘
